Originally hailing from South Bend, Indiana, Kevin has maintained a consistent focus on issues of social justice throughout his career.
He graduated from Northwestern University's prestigious Writing Program as an undergraduate, however Kevin realized that his talents in writing and researching, and crafting creative arguments could be put to better use through service to the community. After deciding that a law degree would be an effective means to achieving those goals, Kevin was accepted to Vanderbilt University Law School in 2005.
His first summer in law school was spent clerking for the ACLU of Tennessee, helping to hone arguments for presentation in front of the Supreme Court of Tennessee in American Civil Liberties Union v. Darnell. During that summer, Kevin became frustrated with the lack of opportunities for those law students truly interested in public service and became the leading student voice in creating what is now the Social Justice Program at VULS. During his second summer, Kevin worked as an associate at Barnes & Thornburg, LLP on various matters regarding small business development and litigation.
Realizing that his interests lay more in the direction of litigation, Kevin began an externship with the Office of the Metropolitan Public Defender in Nashville in September of 2007, won his first bench trial a month later, and has never looked back.
Kevin practiced as an Assistant Public Defender for just over five years, handling hundreds of misdemeanor and felony cases from Driver’s License issues up to Aggravated Felonies and Felony drug issues. Kevin has also served as the Public Defender’s liason to General Sessions Treatment Court, Mental Health Court, and as a volunteer with the Oasis Center and Operation Stand Down as part of the Public Defender’s outreach program.
In the last two years of his practice at the Office of the Metropolitan Public Defender, Kevin ran the DUI Bench Trial Unit in General Sessions Court, filing motions, arguing suppression issues, and litigating misdemeanor DUI offenses. His experience on dealing with all DUI related issues - from ground-breaking law and constantly shifting statutes to reinstatement of driving privileges - is what sets him apart from other attorneys in Davidson and all surrounding counties that are practicing today.
